How to make water taste better?? Water is one of the most essential nutrients for life, yet many people fall short of the recommendations.
Making water more drinkable and appealing is key. Here are some tips to spice up your basic water and make it more exciting and palatable. The better water tastes, the more likely you are to drink it!
What can be added to water to make it taste better??
Add Fresh Fruit or a Splash of Juice
When transitioning away from sweetened beverages, a gateway flavor can help. Adding fresh fruit or a splash of fruit juice to plain water provides real fruit flavor, unlike artificially flavored and sweetened sodas. A squeeze of orange or lemon can make a big difference. And don’t forget about cucumber water – a spa favorite!
Add Spices or Herbs
Fresh herbs and spices like rosemary, basil, cinnamon, mint, and thyme add refreshing flavors to plain water. It’s like making your own homemade tea.
Hydration is crucial for many bodily functions. It helps regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.
Make Flavored Ice Cubes
Freeze various food elements in ice cubes to add to your drinks. It makes them more visually appealing and interesting. You can use juices, fruits, or herbs. My husband likes coffee ice cubes in water, which I find odd, but to each their own!

How to drink more water if you don’t like the taste??
Try Sparkling Water
Carbonation can make a drink more enjoyable. Replace soda with sparkling water and add some flavor extras like juice or fruit to get the same fizzy effect.
Brew Tea in Your Hot Water
Tea is essentially water with natural flavors. I love using my Teavana brewer for loose leaf tea, but a regular tea bag works just as well. Most flavored teas are made with spices and herbs, providing enough flavor without added sugars.
How do you know if you’re drinking enough water?
Here are a few signs:
- Thirst: If you’re feeling thirsty, your body is already telling you it needs more water.
- Urine Color: Light yellow or clear urine usually means you’re well-hydrated. Dark yellow urine can be a sign of dehydration.
- Dry Skin: Skin that is dry or less elastic can indicate dehydration.
- Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired can be a symptom of dehydration.
- Headaches: Dehydration can sometimes cause headaches.
How much water should you be drinking??
While the “8×8 rule” (eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day) is a good starting point, individual water needs can vary. Listening to your body’s signals and drinking when you’re thirsty is a simple guideline to follow.
As there’s no one-size-fits-all answer and water intake is individualized, you should check with your doctor about the right amount for you (can be influenced by medical conditions) but a general rule of thumb:
-
Men is about 15.5 cups
-
Women about 11.5 cups
At least 4-6 of these cups should be just PLAIN water! Factors like age, gender, weight, climate, and physical activity levels all play a role.
Personally, I prefer drinking plain water as I find it most quenching, but I know I’m in the minority. Adding appealing flavors can definitely improve water intake.
Drinking enough water for Diabetes
Obviously water is important for everyone but it is especially important in diabetes. Staying well-hydrated helps regulate blood sugar levels by aiding the kidneys in flushing out excess glucose through urine. Proper hydration can prevent dehydration, which can cause blood sugar levels to spike. Additionally, drinking water instead of sugary beverages helps manage calorie intake and supports overall health, making it easier to control diabetes and maintain a balanced lifestyle.
How do you like to drink water??
My grandmother used to freeze iced tea in ice cube trays and add it to iced tea so it didnt get watery. The coffee idea is also brilliant! I’ve been a big fan of seltzer these days!
I think seltzer is a great way to make a mocktail or fancier water drink to keep things interesting without adding alcohol or sugar
Such great ideas! I’m always trying to drink more water so I’ll try your tips 🙂
Drinking out of a fancy glass helps too 😉
