Summer is one of the busiest times of year for just about everyone… between school breaks, vacations, weddings, summer holidays, and other occasions most schedules are packed. It’s important to try to keep our healthy routine consistent for optimal wellness.

Here’s what help me keep my summer on track:

1. Schedule workouts

Summertime is usually my triathlon training months and it’s important to make sure I fit in all 3 events in my weekly workouts. Since I’m still sidelined from running I’m using the elliptical and other forms of cardio including boot camps for some workouts. Swimming is the perfect summer sport- whether you’re indoors or outdoors, a swim is always refreshing and cooling. Bike rides are perfect on summer days, I just try to avoid riding during peak hours of sunlight to keep them cooler. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen when you are exercising outdoors!

2. Optimize nutrition

One of the most important things to consider during the summer months nutritionally is staying hydrated.  It’s hot and sunny so we need to up our fluids. Summer is also a month people tend to skip meals because of plans or less appetite in the heat. One way to make sure you get a boost of nutrition is one of Bob’s Red Mill Protein powders. A smoothie is an easy go to for hydrating, stockpiling fruits and vegetables, and meeting your protein needs without consuming too many heavy meats.  A few of many great attributes of these protein powders is they are vegan, gluten free, and contain probiotics! Make sure you enter the giveaway featuring Bob’s Red Mill protein powders at the end of the post and GRAB A COUPON HERE.

3. Create flexible meal plans

I’ll be honest- even as a dietitian I’m not a big meal planning fan. I’m very fly by the seat of your pants aka what am I craving tonight. However this method can lead to less healthy options as well as going out to eat.  Start out by planning 2-3 meals a week- I usually try to make at least one big dish that will provide leftovers for lunch for multiple days- check out my Mediterranean salad recipe here. Also chopping up some veggies and buying more greens is an easy way to make sure you are fitting in healthy foods.

4. Write out a daily to do list

This helps me be productive and strive to accomplish everything that needs to be done in a day. Usually this list is in the reminders on my phone. Go to bank, get gas, write post, call Angela, etc.

You guys- this is huge. It’s so easy when I’m working to see a notification pop up on my screen and then it turns into scrolling through Instagram for 20 minutes. Nothing gets you off track like social media! By turning off notifications and just checking our phones periodically it eliminates a lot of distractions.

  1. I didn’t realize Bob’s had protein powder! I love their steel cut oats. I’d love to try the vanilla or chai, but right now, my favorite flavor of protein powder is chocolate.

  2. Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola

Summer is the easiest time for me to stay on track with eating a lot of vegetables because of the summer produce and farmers markets. Now that I’m tri training, hopefully the workouts will fall into place as well 🙂

  3. I never veer off track. My mind is programmed to always do things that it knows is good for my body – and I have to thank my parents for that! Summer, fall, winter, spring – all the seasons don’t change how I live!

  4. Heather @ Polyglot Jot

Great tips! I’m a definite workout scheduler–I’d never workout if I didnt. Haha! I love chocolate protein powders!

  5. Smart tips for good health and wellness this summer. To-do lists are a must for me — love ticking off those boxes! As for protein powders, I’ve only tried a handful, with some serious misses under my belt. This is the first I’m seeing of Bob’s version, and am curious to try the chai flavor! CHEERS.

  6. Love Bob’s products, can’t wait to try the protein powder. My favorite protein powder right now is the vanilla flavor from JuicePlus.
